Summer in Sydney can mean only one thing - sizzling fun under the sun! From long, lazy days on the beach, to pounding the pavement with serious retail therapy, local cultural celebrations and must-visit festivals, boredom is definitely off the agenda
No visit to Sydney would be complete without catching a game at the Sydney Cricket Ground. To help you make the most of your time in Sydney, here are some of the top SCG and Entertainment Quarter events to experience in the summer of 2021.
Sydney Cricket Ground
The Sydney Opera House, One Central Park, Sydney Tower, Queen Victoria Building and the Sydney Cricket Ground all have one thing in common; they are Sydney icons famous the world over - and we’re lucky enough to have them all on our doorstep
More than just another sporting venue, the SCG has a rich history, woven into the very tapestry of the city itself. Dating back almost 170 years, the very first cricket match was held on the grounds in 1854. It wasn’t until 1875 that the NSW Cricket Association permitted it as an official cricket ground, redeveloping the area and renaming it as the ACG. Located just a 20-minute drive from Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach, reaching it for Test matches, Big Bash, Mardi Gras and tours is quick and convenient.
Start the New Year with the Australia vs India Test Match from January 7th -11th, 2021 at the SCG. Soak up the atmosphere, while enjoying great weather and all of the excitement of the game.
The Indian cricket team will be touring Australia from November 2020 until January 2021, with the biggest match being held at the SCG. Don't miss out on the Cricket game of the year. Stand by for more details on ticket availability shortly.
Soak up the warm summer sun as the Big Bash League kicks things up a gear. Cheer on your favourite team, enjoy a family day out and get involved in the excitement of the year ahead.
Take in the first BBL game of the year as the Sydney Sixers host Perth Scorchers on January 16th, 2021. On January 22nd, the Sixers face the Sydney Thunder. January 24th sees the Hobart Hurricanes travel to NSW and face the Sixers, while January 26th is when the Perth Scorchers go up against Brisbane Heat.
Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras
In 2021, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is being held in one of Australia's most iconic venues. For the first time in history, the SCG will be transforming into the ultimate LGBTQI+ event space.
Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras will now be able to host 46,000 spectators at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Unlike traditional Mardi Gras floats, this year's parade pulls inspiration from its heritage with plenty of glitzy pageantry, colourful performances and outfits made to dazzle.
The theme is one that brings everyone from any background together - RISE - which after the hardships 2020 brought, embraces respect, compassion, understanding and togetherness.
The first internationally significant event to be held since the spread of COVID-19 will take place on March 6th, 2021, with adult tickets $20, concessions, $15 and groups are $50.
Game Day in the EQ
The Entertainment Quarter is the perfect place to enjoy pre-game dinner and drinks or post-game celebrations throughout the season. Living up to its name, entertainment is definitely on the menu here.
Grab a bite to eat at Azure Cafe or Backyard Burger Kitchen. Enjoy a glass or two of vino at Urban Winery Sydney or grab a cold one at The Comedy Store. Travelling with kids? Play at B.Lucky & Sons, ride the Choo Choo Train or visit Monkey Mania.
Other dates to save for Sydney EQ include:
Waterworld Central - Dec 28th, 2020 to Jan 26th, 2021. Get ready to cool off at Australia's first mobile waterpark. Held over the school holidays, it's a place to speed down daring water slides, relax at the wading pool, walk on water in the Zorb Balls and much more. Entry is $5 for non-participants, $25 for a 2hr Little Dip n Slide Pass and $35 for the 2hr Splash n Slide Pass.
Sometimes, the best way to spend the day in Sydney is by stepping behind the scenes and into the history of its iconic landmarks. The Sydney Cricket Ground is bursting at the seams with history and culture - along with providing glimpses into the ‘off-limits’ areas of the grounds.
Tread the path of champions, explore the SCG museum, learn about the architecture and history of the precinct and listen to stories of players who have stood the test of time. Guided tours run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for private tours and group tours.
