Here are our top tips for weekend family fun in Coogee Beach.
Coogee to Bondi Walk
Enjoy the coastal walk from Coogee to Bondi, which is one of the most popular and beautiful walks in Sydney. And, for a good reason.
This 6km walking trail first takes you from Coogee to Clovelly, the perfect place to grab a coffee and take five on the beach. From here, you jump across to Bronte which is a snorkelers paradise and a great place for kids to enjoy a dip in the clear, gentle waters. From Bronte, you'll make your way to Tamarama popular surfing hotspot before finally arriving at Bondi.
In total, the coastal walk will take roughly 3 hours from start to end. It's an amazing way to discover many of the smaller hidden gems between the two beaches and comes with plenty of picnic, BBQ and foodie opportunities along the way. Spend a few hours exploring Bondi, then retreat to the tranquillity of Coogee for a well-deserved rest.
Outdoor Ocean Pool
Do you love to swim in the sea but not a fan of what's in there with you? (We've all charged out of the water thinking there’s something in the water - turns out it's just some seaweed) If this sounds like you, then you're going to fall in love with Wylie's Baths tidal beach pool in Coogee.
Forget about riptides, strong surf and seaweed monsters. This saltwater pool offers a safe space for the whole family to relax on the weekend. Another bonus is that the poolside pavilion is sand-free. Throw down your towel, soak up some vitamin D and enjoy the calm, clean pool.
It doesn't matter whether you visit here during summer or winter, there's always fun to be had. Open every day of the year, it costs $4 for adults and $2 for kids, pensioners and students. You'll also find showers and an on-site coffee shop for a little pick-me-up during your day. Perfect!
Eat, Drink and Relax at the Pavilion
Nicknamed 'The Pav' Coogee Pavilion is one of the most popular places to dig into fresh seafood, enjoy a cocktail or two and let the kids go wild in the games arena. Spread out over several floors, the ground floor is where all of the family fun happens.
For those travelling with grown-up children, the Rooftop Pavilion gives you somewhere to enjoy a craft beer or two - minus any youngsters. The huge balcony is the perfect place to soak up sweeping ocean views, feast on Mediterranean style food and just enjoy the beachside vibes.
Located just a few minutes walk from our Coogee Beach Hotel, it's the ideal destination for a last-minute weekend activity located right on the beachside. The Coogee Pavilion is open from 7.30 am till late on Friday and Saturday and from 7.30 am till 12 am on Sunday.
Head Down Under
Coogee Beach is an awesome place to indulge in some unbelievable scuba diving. The nearby scuba diving centre has all of the equipment you need available for hire. During the summer months, water temperatures hover around 21 degrees, and the dive range is around 16 metres.
Head toward the northern end of Coogee Beach and head under the waves near Wedding Cake Island, which buffers the ocean from heavy surf. There’s always lots of marine life to see here, including Weedy Dragon, (found only in NSW waters), vibrant coral reefs, octopus, cuttlefish, seahorses and much more.
Coogee Family Fun Day
Coogee Family Fun Day is an annual event held on the beach, which has locals and travellers alike flocking to attend. The event is held just before Christmas every year.
At the Coogee Beach Celebration, you can expect to find many exciting attractions that will appeal to adults and children of all ages. There’s plenty of entertainment and live music drawing in big crowds. There are also lots of local food stalls to tantalise your taste buds, artisan stalls full of crafts, reptile displays, interactive games and plenty of rides to keep your children entertained.
Relax at the Reserves
Forget about just one reserve, Coogee has six! Each one comes with its own unique experiences perfect for family fun on the weekend. The South Coogee wetlands are a fantastic place for kids to explore rock pools, go crabbing and explore away from the crowds.
Grant Reserve Playground is a kids paradise just off of Coogee Beach. slides, roundabouts, zip wires, climbing frames and more will keep little ones entertained for hours and worn out ready for sleep afterwards!
Other popular parks and reserves in Coogee include Trenerry Reserve, Goldstein Reserve, Neptune Park, and Dunningham Reserve. With so many parks, playgrounds and wide-open spaces, you’ll never be short of places to enjoy a family picnic just a few minutes walk from our Coogee Hotel.
