Sport and Coogee go hand in hand. It could be the location close to all of Sydney’s largest football stadiums and the Sydney Cricket Ground. Or the spectacular surrounding natural landscape, where you wake up to see motivated joggers, swimmers, beach sprinters or bootcamp bodies taking advantage of the beach’s natural fitness arena.
Here are a few ideas for the more active Coogee Beach adventure.
Summer of cricket
It’s the time of year when buzzwords are “century”, “innings” and you see many perfecting their own bowl and batting form. Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach is located close to Sydney Cricket Ground, the home of The Ashes Test held each January as Australia takes on England. And for those wanting to test their own game, Coogee Beach and surrounding parks make for the perfect beach cricket ground for a fun (competitive!) game with family and friends.
Ocean pools challenge
Coogee is home to some pretty incredible Sydney ocean pools. Take the challenge to swim them all, including Wylie’s Baths – a magnificent tidal pool that is a great spot for laps or just hanging out for the day, with a spectacular 180 degree view over the Pacific Ocean and across to Wedding Cake Island. Just around from Wylie’s, there is McIver’s Baths, a seawater pool for women and children – historically that way since before 1876. Then there is the ocean pool by the surf club at Coogee Beach itself – a top spot for an early morning dip.
Yoga zen by the sea
Take part in a yoga class with a view. The Living Room Yoga Studio overlooks Coogee Beach, and offers the perfect location to re-energise and promote calmness and stillness in the mind and relaxation in the body. There are a variety of classes for all levels each day of the week.
Learn to surf or SUP lessons
Let’s Go Surfing offer group and individual lessons, catering to everyone. Coogee Beach is a great place with calmer seas for stand-up paddle (also known as SUP), and soft rolling waves to catch a memorable one to shore.
Guided tours along the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
Let’s Go Surfing also run guided tours of the spectacular 6-kilometre walk, traversing the dramatic coastline as you discover the Eastern Suburbs’ network of beaches, rock pools and parks along the way.
Swim with the gropers at Clovelly Beach
Escape to nearby Clovelly Beach for a snorkel with local and friendly Blue Gropers, a peaceful location with calmer waters.
Barefoot Bowls
For a fun day out with friends and family, take part in a Barefoot Bowls session at South Coogee Bowling Club, a classic Sydney bowls club. Follow it up with lunch at ‘Bistro on the Greens’.
